Thanks to AI today, we can now all simply skip the painstaking process of thinking and learning. But should we?
Fr Johnny Go, SJ, 2025
In the past few years, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has been on the rise for many industries and sectors— offering a wide range of opportunities to support complex and administrative tasks. As an emerging technology in education, GenAI promises to support innovative teaching and learning practices. In the same breath, we recognize that technology is a double-edged sword. The same technology that offers new capabilities holds both short and long-term risks. The question then, is: how do we use it safely, ethically, and responsibly in education?
This January 2026, the Ateneo Institute for the Science and Art of Learning and Teaching (Ateneo SALT), through the support of the Office of the President, launched its professional certificate course entitled, “Introduction to GenAI in Education”. The course provides participants with a foundational understanding of how GenAI works, what is now possible, and how to ethically, critically, and effectively integrate it in learning and teaching.
Designed to be taken fully online, utilizing a strategic mix of asynchronous and synchronous activities, the course invites participants to reflect on the opportunities and limitations of the technology, to clarify policies suited for their current contexts, and to redesign learning activities and assessments in the context of GenAI.
Here are some insights shared by participants from the first batch:
The first batch concluded last March 13, 2026, with the participation of 72 faculty from the School of Humanities (SOH), Gokongwei Brothers School of Education and Learning Design (GBSEALD), and Ateneo Graduate School of Business (AGSB). Faculty from other schools in the University are scheduled to join the course throughout the year.
